Iedere saxofonist(e) bespeelt zijn/haar mondstuk op zijn/haar eigen manier. Mensen zijn verschillend gebouwd: monden, lippen, keelholtes, spieren, ze zijn allemaal anders. Dit heeft onmiskenbaar invloed op de positionering van de lippen rond het mondstuk/riet, de opening van de keelholte, de mate van omklemming van het mondstuk/riet (losjes of juist strak) en de druk waarmee geblazen wordt.

  

Every saxophonist will use their mouthpiece in their own way while playing. People are built differently – their mouth, lips, throat and muscles all differ. This will unmistakably influence the positioning of the lips around the mouthpiece/reed, the opening of the throat, the grip around the mouthpiece (tight or loose) and the amount of pressure on the mouthpiece/reed.
   
Daarnaast heeft iedere saxofonist een andere klank voor ogen en zal iedere saxofonist op een andere manier die klank proberen te zoeken. Het komt dan ook vaak voor dat saxofonisten met dezelfde ‘setup’ van saxmerk/mondstuk/riet een totaal ander geluid voortbrengen. Ook komt het voor dat saxofonisten met een verschillende sax/mondstuk/riet-setup toch bijna hetzelfde klinken.

Moreover, every saxophonist is looking for a different sound and will try to find that sound in their own way. Two saxophonists using the same setup of saxophone brand, mouthpiece and reed may still produce a completely different sound. On the other hand, two saxophonists using different saxophone brands, mouthpieces and reeds may sound (almost) alike.

In de visie van mondstukkenmaker Ko Zuidweg is het niet toereikend om een paar mondstuktypen op de markt te brengen en er vanuit te gaan dat deze mondstukken alle wensen van saxofonisten wereldwijd kunnen bevredigen. Dit verklaart ook dat er momenteel zo ontzettend veel mondstukfabrikanten zijn. Er is behoefte aan meer variaties in mondstukken. Toch doen deze fabrikanten allemaal hetzelfde: ze brengen een paar modellen op de markt waar we het mee moeten doen. Saxofonisten geven vaak een klein fortuin uit om al deze mondstukken te proberen en de meeste met verlies weer door te verkopen.

In Ko’s opinion, producing only a few types of mouthpieces will be insufficient to meet the requirements of each and every saxophonist in the world. It’s obvious there’s a need for more variations when it comes to mouthpieces. Hence the number of mouthpiece producers has been growing. Still, these producers all tend to do the same thing: they offer a few types of mouthpieces and leave it at that. As a result, saxophonists may spend a small fortune trying out different mouthpieces, leaving them with no choice but to resell most of the mouthpieces again at loss.
   
Reden voor Ko Zuidweg om het anders te doen en het ontwerp van een mondstuk vooral van de toekomstige bespeler te laten afhangen. De bespeler moet de baas zijn over het mondstuk, hij of zij moet erop en er vooral mee kunnen spelen.

This is why Ko has taken on another view when it comes to creating mouthpieces. In his opinion, the mouthpiece design should for the greater part depend on the individual customer. The saxophonist should be in control of the mouthpiece and thus be able to produce the sound he or she is looking for.

Er zijn geen twee ‘Knock Out’ mondstukken hetzelfde, omdat Ko Zuidweg maatwerk levert door een mondstuk aan te passen op de wensen van de saxofonist. Om dit te kunnen doen heeft hij doorlopend een voorraad handgemaakte Knock Out mondstukken in huis met verschillende kamers, baanlengtes, tip-en raildiktes, baffle-designs en tipopeningen. Aan deze mondstukken kunnen nog kleine wijzigingen worden aangebracht om voor iedere saxofonist het meest ideale mondstuk te creëren.


  

As Ko customizes each mouthpiece to the wishes of each saxophonist, no two Knock Out mouthpieces are exactly alike. In order to be able to do this, Ko has produced a stock of handmade (but as yet unfinished) Knock Out mouthpieces. These mouthpieces are provided with different chamber sizes, facing lengths, tip and rail thickness, baffle shapes and tip opening sizes. All of these mouthpieces can be modified to create the ideal mouthpiece for every saxophonist.
